How to enable HTTP traffic for VMs in GCP with Firewall rules

Google Cloud firewall rules allow or deny traffic to and from virtual machine (VM) instances based on a configuration that is specified in firewall rules. Below are the steps for configuring firewall for allowing HTTP traffic on VM.

Login to Google Cloud Console and navigate to "VPC network" in "NETWORKING" section.

  • In VPC network click on Firewall rules
  • Click "CREATE FIREWALL RULE"

  • Provide Firewall rule details as listed below.
    • Name: allow-http-all
    • Logs: Off
    • Network: default(or any other network where target vms located)
    • Priority: 1000
    • Direction of traffic: Ingress
    • Targets: All instances in network(this configuration for only dev purpose, in prod specified target tags should be provided)
    • Source IP ranges: 0.0.0.0/0(this is open to all if you want to restrict access configure IP range accordingly)
    • Second source filter: None
    • Protocols and ports: Select Specified protocols and ports
    • Select tcp and use port 80.

  • Click "CREATE"

    • After this configuration HTTP traffic would be allowed on target VMs.
